Loss to Packers – EaglesFanCast 210

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe home crowd at Lincoln Financial Field got our first loss of the season to the Green Bay Packers 27-13. It was the worst loss of the season as well, at 14 points. What that means is to date, the Eagles have hung with every team they lost to, and most of those losses were by less than a touchdown. Feel down about this loss, feel bad that the season is all but over, but Eagles fans, do not feel bad about how this season has set a standard for the organization moving forward. There is a lot of hope, even though we want that success now, not next year, or the year after that. We want that success now. But first the Eagles have to lose to the Packers, who played a better game against an Eagles team with several starters injured, and a struggling Offense with a rookie quarterback.

December has hit, meaning not only colder temps, but it means we are quickly approaching the end of the season. This means we get to watch our future quarterback Carson Wentz continue to develop week after week. Let him learn by making mistakes, getting hit, or making poor decisions. There is a lot to like in this kid, and we are riding this Wentzwagon to playoffs in the not so distant future.

The Birds fly over to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals this week. The Bengals are also struggling, and this is a game the Eagles, on paper, should win. Looking forward to getting that taste back when we take on the NFC East teams the rest of the season.

Congratulations to Jeremiah Trotter and Merrill Reese for being inducted into the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame. Both are deserving of the accolades.

The Best Roster In The League!

“I feel this year we have the best roster in the league” said Joe Banner on July 26th 2009. As we now know, that roster didn’t fulfill its potential to win a Super Bowl. It didn’t even come close. Does getting rid of ten players back up Banner’s previous assessment or blow it out of the water? Well, when you consider that he also claimed to have the best roster in 2003, 2004 and again in 2008 I’d lean heavily towards the latter.

And so we say goodbye to released team-mates Will Witherspoon, Brian Westbrook, Shawn Andrews, Kevin Curtis and Darren Howard, plus the recently traded Reggie Brown, Chris Clemons, Sheldon Brown, Chris Gocong and Donovan McNabb. That’s a massive exodus of veteran personnel including, of course, the franchise Quarterback.

What does this mean for the coming season? Well, for one thing we’re likely to have the youngest group of players in the NFL. As far as I can see only David Akers, Sav Rocca, Juqua Parker and Jeremiah Trotter are over the age of thirty in a league where experience means a huge amount.

When Andy Reid was asked last week who his offensive leaders were he answered, “That’s a good question because Kevin becomes one of them. One of the things I’ve mentioned is that I think he’s a good leader. I think we have some tremendous leaders up front. DeSean Jackson has turned into a kid that has shown leadership ability. Brent Celek is one of our primary leaders.”

These are all young guys with a lot on their shoulders already, how much can they reasonably take on and still play at their best? Reid refers to DeSean Jackson as a “kid” which says it all. No matter how talented, these guys are barely more than rookies.

The successful returns of Jamaal Jackson and Stacy Andrews will be a big boost to the organization, but the Draft is where Andy Reid is undoubtedly focusing. With eleven picks to play with including five in the first 87 overall, we have some serious bargaining power.

I’m really looking forward to the Draft this year. With the revamped format, eleven picks and Andy Reid calling the shots it should be quite spectacular for the watching Eagles fans. There are some big gaps to fill, such as cornerback, but Reid has shown time and time again that he’s good at this side of the job and I’ll be relaxing with popcorn on hand and Twitter fired up!

I’m quite excited by this rebuilding process and for me, the Eagles ARE rebuilding even though no one at NovaCare will admit it. It may be a year or two until we make the playoffs again, but this team growing up together could eventually lead us to that elusive Super Bowl title that we all crave so much.

Just one thing though. If Joe Banner claims again this year that we have the best roster in the league, I’ll know for sure that his rose-tinted glasses are superglued to his face!

Cheers from the UK and GO BIRDS!

EaglesFanCast 67 – Raiders of the Lost Cause

The Philadelphia Eagles lose to the horrible Oakland Raiders in a game that pretty much everyone thought was a lock for a Win.  Almost every aspect of the team contributed to the embarrassment, from coaching, playcalling, tackling, passing, blocking and kicking.  We try to express some of what transpired since the game, what went wrong, and our concerns for the future.  Joining us this week is Cody Benjamin, from the Eagles fan blog, Bleed Green.

What we discussed:

  • Cody from Bleed Green joins us, and we ask him about his site
  • Who is to blame for this horrible loss? It might be easier to say who is not
  • Andy Reid shoulders the blame for this loss… no adjustments, and he was completely outcoached
  • Eagles trade with Rams at the deadline, picked up LB Will Witherspoon and sent them rookie WR Brandon Gibson
  • Donovan McNabb was under pressure all game, and he was too jumpy as a result
  • Stacy Andrews still looking tender, and may not be 100% for a while yet
  • email from Evan
  • email from Aussie Steve
  • email saying farewell to Trotter
  • email from Dr. Krug in Gettysburg
  • We are angry about this loss, and why?
  • We touch on what to be nervous about moving forward

EaglesFanCast 66 – Welcome Back McNabb

The Philadelphia Eagles take apart the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 33-14 in Philadelphia this week.  Quarterback Donovan McNabb returns from his rib injury, Jeremiah Trotter returns to the team, and Jeremy Maclin has a phenomenal game playing for the injured Kevin Curtis.  The win wasn’t without some negativity, but the Offense put together a solid game and helped Head Coach Andy Reid move to 11-0 after the BYE week.

What we discussed:

  • Eagles beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 33-14, but although satisfying, it wasn’t fun to watch throughout
  • The game was frustrating because of the amount of penalties, poor officiating and just how bad Tampa Bay is
  • We talk about the play of McNabb, Westbrook, Maclin, Celek and more
  • Andy Reid’s rumored contract extension, and he is now 11-0 after the BYE
  • Email from Aussie Steve
  • Email from Alex
  • Steve from the UK put together 10 years of stats in a spreadsheet and has been analyzing the hell out of it showing how much Eagles fans love their football

We tried something new this week, as we incorporated a live chat during the show recording.  We wanted to get a live chat going so people could interact and participate while we record.  Then we realized that it would make more sense if you could hear what we were talking about.  So we configured a channel over at ustream.  We tested it out, and it was a success, and we had a bunch of people in the chat room checking out the scene and we only let people know a few minutes beforehand!  Awesome time, thanks to everyone who came and visited.

We’ll be doing this each week when we record from now on since the live feedback was all positive.  Bookmark our channel at http://ustream.tv/channel/EaglesFanCast, and register for an account, so you can join in the chat!
