Chip Kelly Fired – EaglesFanCast 197

EaglesFanCast Podcast

Well the Philadelphia Eagles season was ended in embarrassing fashion with the Washington Redskins crushing the Birds in Philly, racking up yet another loss at home.

But what overshadows this loss, and the loss of the season, is that the Eagles organization, namely Jeffrey Lurie, fired head coach Chip Kelly today unexpectedly.  We, along with Eagles guru Tommy Lawlor, discuss the why’s, how Kelly lost the will of some players, and the rest of the circumstances surrounding this untimely development.

Fans so far on social media seem to be overwhelmingly for this move by the team, with not much sympathy for Chip.  We of course start the speculation, with Todd thinking Jon Gruden returns to Philadelphia, and Tommy is interested in the Saints’ Sean Peyton.  Many names are eventually mentioned, and you can catch them all on the audio!  Chuck’s pick is Tommy, so let’s #HireTommy.

Oh yeah, there is one final game in the 2015 NFL season.  The Eagles play the New York Giants in a meaningless game.  The temporary head coach for that game is Pat Shurmur.

It is never boring being an Eagles fan, is it?  It may be painful at times, disappointing at others, and exciting as well, but it is never, ever boring being an Eagles fan.

Gut Check – EaglesFanCast 161

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles get what we hope is a gut check in losing to the Minnesota Vikings 48-30, snapping the five-game win streak.  The Eagles Offense started out slow and quarterback Nick Foles struggled early on.  This left the Eagles Defense on the field a lot during the first half, and by the second half they were gassed, the Bears Offense played very well, and exploited a damaged Eagles secondary.

Eagles fans’ sad feelings were definitely diminished as the Dallas Cowboys played the Green Bay Packers, and after leading the Packers 26-3 at halftime, very impressively lost the game.  This left the Eagles alone in first place in the NFC East, and setting up a very critical, and exciting final two weeks of the season.

The Chicago Bears rumble into Lincoln Financial Field this week, and the game was flexed to the Sunday Night Football game as both teams have an 8-6 record and hoping for playoff spots.  The Eagles, we believe, will use the humbling loss this week to reassess their weaknesses and adjust to what is needed, both on the players and coaching sides.  This week was a gut check… the Eagles are a team that will overcome, and they will win this game at home.

Green is the New Black – EaglesFanCast 159

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles win their fourth straight game, this time at home defeating the Arizona Cardinals 24-21 and moving to 7-5 on the season.  With the Cowboys win on Thanksgiving day, that keeps both teams tied for the NFC East, but with the Cowboys having the edge due to Division record.

The win over the Cardinals did come with concerns as the Eagles Offense again seemed to sputter and underperform in the fourth quarter.  Quarterback Nick Foles threw for three more touchdowns with no interceptions, but made some mistakes in the game I’m sure he would have wanted to take a mulligan on.  But that’s ok, it’s part of the learning process for a young player.  Foles has shown much more positive in his play than negative, and he continues to show confidence and poise of players in the league many more years than he.

On the flip side, we saw the Eagles Defense continue to impress, with yet another excellent showing by Trent Cole.  Cole had another two sacks, a forced fumble, and was pressuring Cardinals’ QB Carson Palmer all game.  That made such a difference in the Cards’ Offense, it is a testament to both the play of Cole and Defensive Coordinator Bill Davis.

So at the beginning of December, we are now talking very seriously about the Eagles in the playoff hunt.  What a difference a year makes.  Eagles football continues to be fun, and we are enjoying this ride as far as it takes us.

December With a Purpose – EaglesFanCast 158

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles had their BYE week this week, and the players, coaches, and fans had a much-needed breather after a roller coaster and exciting two-thirds of the season so far.  Todd and Chuck sit down with the always-knowledgable Tommy Lawlor to discuss the season so far.  Nick Foles is obviously the big news so far this season, and is making it very tough for all involved to not look at him as an exceptional player this season so far.  To come in as a backup and then lead the league in several stats, as well as be a part of the Hall of Fame?

Other than Foles’ performance, the Eagles Defense is the most satisfying surprise.  Defensive Coordinator Bill Davis brought in a new scheme to the team, and the players had some growing pains adjusting early in the season.  The run defense is still suspect, but overall they are doing a very good job in the Red Zone, and keeping the big points off the board, allowing the Eagles Offense to work and put in a solid performance.

Philly Jawn – EaglesFanCast 156

EaglesFanCast PodcastBack to back wins, and back to back impressive displays from our backup quarterback Nick Foles as the Philadelphia Eagles traveled to Green Bay and beat the Packers 27-13.  Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers was out with an injury, and the Eagles Defense did what they had to do to stop the Packers two backup quarterbacks from doing any kind of damage all game.  It was another fun game to watch, as even the bad passes seemed to thread needles in the Birds’ favor, and that usually doesn’t happen to the Eagles.  Foles was not perfect this time around, but still threw no interceptions, and had another three touchdown passes; two again to his favorite target Riley Cooper, and another to Desean Jackson.  Shady McCoy had a great game, running the ball all day without much getting in his way.

This week the Eagles go back home, and NFC East Division rivals Washington Redskins drive up to the Linc for the festivities.  With a big Division game, and the bad juju of a very long winless streak at home, it is a game that must be won.  After this game the team can relax for the BYE, but they have work to do first.  The Eagles fans must show up, be loud, and support the players and the team.
