The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they’ve cut LB Takeo Spikes today. Here’s the link to the Eagles website news.
Well, it’s not a surprise to many, especially when he wasn’t showing up on the site’s depth charts. How about the $5m this now frees up for the Eagles cap? What an offseason it’s turning into, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
One trait of a good journalist is trust – he or she should establish a network of trusted sources (read: spies) and should return that trust by NEVER revealing those sources when asked. We here at EaglesFanCast try to be everywhere at once, and it is with the help of our ever-expanding network that we bring you the latest news about our beloved Birds.
The latest rumor swirling around the team is a whopper. According to our sources, the Eagles and Arizona Cardinals are once again discussing a deal. The particulars? CB Lito Sheppard, OT Winston Justice, and our 1st round pick…for none other than WR Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald carries a $16 million cap number for this year and the next – that is a pretty big nugget which would force the Eagles to get a bit creative. One way I see them doing this is by releasing LB Takeo Spikes and his $5 million cap number. I saw the future of the Eagles LB corps towards the end of last year, with Omar Gaither and Chris Gocong on the outside and Stewart Bradley in the middle. Plus, did you happen to see what number was issued to our latest acquisition, Chris Clemons? That would be # 50. A linebacker’s number. I think the writing is on the wall for Spikes at least; whether it leads to us acquiring Fitzgerald will remain to be seen.
Also, it is now being reported that UFA WR Randy Moss is returning to New England with a three-year deal. Before you get all bent and ream the front office for not making a pitch, our sources are telling us that Andy Reid and Moss recently had a 1.5 hour conversation, but they obviously could not agree on contractual terms. Well, at least they gave it the ol’ college try.
According to a post over at Inside the Iggles, Samuel has signed a long-term deal with the Eagles. We’ll know more soon, as there’s a press conference at 4:30pm Eastern. Definitely a good, aggressive start to free agency! Here we go!
Here’s a link to Ian’s post here.
It’s official! The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that Samuel is now an Eagle. He signed a six-year deal.
So, uhhhh, when will his jersey be on sale?
According to posts seen on NFL.com and PhiladelphiaEagles.com, Asante Samuel is in visiting the Eagles today. Supposedly the Eagles are his only stop, so this seems like it might be close to a done deal.
Today the Philadelphia Eagles released DE Jevon Kearse. It’s definitely a sad day because I know a lot of Eagles fans had very high hopes that The Freak would bring his amazing play from Tennessee. His knee injury two seasons ago seemed to do him in, and he struggled quite a bit in the 2007 season. Sad to see him go, but it makes some room.
In other news, the Eagles and safety J.R. Reed agreed to terms on a one-year deal.
The Eagles and cornerback Joselio Hanson also agreed to a one-year deal. Hanson is a restricted free agent, and if another team signs him to an offer sheet, the Eagles have seven days to match that deal. A second-round compensatory draft pick is theirs if they decide not to match the offer.
