Eagles Pre-Draft 2017 – EaglesFanCast 217

The 2017 NFL Draft is just one day away, and we are talking Eagles prospects, needs, wants, and expectations with none other than Tommy Lawlor!

This year the Draft is being held in Philadelphia, and the city’s Eagles fans are beyond excited for this event. Chuck will be going, and trying to tweet during the event from the Eagles Nest section of the audience.

So as is usual in our annual Draft shows, we covered a lot. Some of what you’ll hear on this show…

We go over the 2017 Eagles season game by game, and predict the season record, hilariously, of course.

When Tommy Lawlor joins us, we get down to the true purpose of the show, and tap Tommy’s brain for everything Draft. The players of note that we discussed were:
Corey Davis, WR
Mitch Trubisky, QB
Gareon Conley, CB
Derek Barnett, DE
Charles Harris, DE
Christian McCaffrey, RB
Jonathan Allen, DT
Reuben Foster, ILB
Marshon Lattimore, CB
Jamal Adams, S
OJ Howard, TE

Lot of fun talking with Tommy as always, and the excitement for the Draft is here. We will know tomorrow where the Eagles are headed for this season, and those that follow.

Bird Feed – EaglesFanCast 204

EaglesFanCast PodcastThis one hurts more. The Eagles lose their second game, this one to NFC East rival Washington Redskins.

The arguments before the season started that positional depth might be a factor as the season progresses and injuries become a factor seems to have been proven true. At least in the right tackle position vacated by the now-suspended Lane Johnson. Johnson’s replacement, rookie tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai (ok, let’s just go with Big V) struggled in his first start, and the Redskins took advantage of him, putting way more pressure on Carson Wentz than he was used to. Eagles also used three tight ends to help Big V at times, which resulted in a more limited offensive threat. The Birds were kept out of the end zone on offense, and the Eagles Defense allowed three scores by Skins QB Kirk Cousins.

The Eagles did get two touchdowns in exciting style, the first on a kickoff return for a TD by Wendell Smallwood, then on the following Redskins series Malcolm Jenkins intercepted Cousins and ran it back 64 yards for another TD. Although those two scores tied the game back up at 14 apiece, ironically it also allowed the tired Eagles Defense to be on the field for almost the entire second quarter.

Both sides of this team were not clicking Sunday, and now the Eagles are 3-2 on the season, with the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings coming into Lincoln Financial Field this week… beyond that, the schedule does not get any easier.

We were excited to once again have Steve Brown on with us to chat and talk about his upcoming trip to Philly for the Vikings game.

Giddy Preseason – EaglesFanCast 184

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles played their third preseason game, the first on the road, against the Green Bay Packers.  The Birds lay down 39 points in the first half alone.  On top of that, quarterback Sam Bradford played a perfect game.  We reiterate… perfect.  He threw no incompletions, going 10 for 10 for 121 yards, and three touchdowns, in the first seven minutes of the game.  Bradford’s accuracy was great, and he had the finesse and confidence that every team wants as their starter.

It’s hard not to get excited at this point about what we are seeing in our QB, his weapons, the much-improved Defense, and even the continued success of special teams.

The last preseason game is on the road against the New York Jets up in northern New Jersey.  We will not see many of the high-caliber starters, but we will get to see the depth players fighting to make the team. The 53-man roster deadline is fast approaching, and I don’t envy the Eagles coaches with making those decisions as to what players have to go.

Bradford and Murray – EaglesFanCast 183

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe second preseason game is in the books, and so is another 40 points from the Eagles!  It wasn’t just the high score that has us kind of excited, but also that our new quarterback Sam Bradford looked good, and took a few hits and felt good about it.  On top of it, our new running back, DeMarco Murray, also did well, running strong, and scoring a touchdown against a Baltimore Ravens Defense that looked almost lazy.  What else?  Oh maybe that our new wide receiver Nelson Agholor continues to impress, and we also ran back a punt for a touchdown (Kenjon Barner’s second in two games), and of course a couple of interceptions of Joe Flacco by safety Walter Thurmond and cornerback Byron Maxwell also gives a warm feeling in the stomach.

On top of everything else, Mychal Kendricks, our outstanding linebacker, just signed a long-term deal with the Eagles today.  Along with fellow linebacker Kiko Alonso coming back from his injury soon, possibly this week, we should all be excited.

Things look good right now, and the excitement continues to build to a 2015 Philadelphia Eagles season with Chip Kelly’s plan starting to take shape for all of us.  We will see more this week when the Eagles travel to play the Green Bay Packers.
