Free Agency 2014 – EaglesFanCast 164

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe 2014 NFL season came to a close, the Super Bowl was played, and the players from all teams cleaned out their locker rooms, some for the last time with their team, some for the last time as a player in the league.  The work then began for the coaches, management, owners, agents, and many others.  Free agency was just around the corner, and the teams do what they can to strengthen their team where they can, or when they lose players.  The Eagles were very active in the first few days of free agency this year, picking up players and even a trade for another running back that took many by surprise.

But did the Eagles really improve drastically, or was it an incremental improvement?  What were the missed opportunities so far, and now how much does the team need to rely on the Draft to finish the job?  Tonight we sat down with our longtime friend, Jason Brewer, the founder of Bleeding Green Nation, and talk about all of these areas.  We also have the pleasure of trashing the rest of the NFC East in mocking some (ok, most) of their decisions.

December With a Purpose – EaglesFanCast 158

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles had their BYE week this week, and the players, coaches, and fans had a much-needed breather after a roller coaster and exciting two-thirds of the season so far.  Todd and Chuck sit down with the always-knowledgable Tommy Lawlor to discuss the season so far.  Nick Foles is obviously the big news so far this season, and is making it very tough for all involved to not look at him as an exceptional player this season so far.  To come in as a backup and then lead the league in several stats, as well as be a part of the Hall of Fame?

Other than Foles’ performance, the Eagles Defense is the most satisfying surprise.  Defensive Coordinator Bill Davis brought in a new scheme to the team, and the players had some growing pains adjusting early in the season.  The run defense is still suspect, but overall they are doing a very good job in the Red Zone, and keeping the big points off the board, allowing the Eagles Offense to work and put in a solid performance.

Offense None – EaglesFanCast 154

EaglesFanCast PodcastTen straight home losses for the Philadelphia Eagles, as they lose to the New York Giants, and scoring no Offensive touchdowns in two straight games.  Quarterback Michael Vick, making his return start from a hamstring injury struggled and did not look confident, then left the game re-injuring his hamstring.  We discuss how this might be the last time we see Vick lead the Offense this season, or ever in Eagle Green.

A bright spot in the game was the improving play of the Defense.  Yes, we know that it was against a horrible Giants Offense, but Defensive Coordinator Bill Davis is making the talent his has work, and has been a relative bright spot the past few weeks.  We also talk about how Eagles fans are reacting with emotion regarding head coach Chip Kelly, with many on social media and calling the sports talk stations calling for Chip’s firing.  It is way too early for something like that, and everyone needs to give all of this time.  The Eagles organization is showing it has the future in mind, with the Eagles getting a couple of Draft picks from the New England Patriots in a trade for Eagles Defensive Tackle Isaac Sopoaga.  We need to be patient.  The Eagles are where we expected them to be before the season started.  What we didn’t expect is the flashes of brilliance that stoked the fires of hope.  And right now Philadelphia is in desperate need of hope on the sports front.

A scary good connection:

Controversy No More – EaglesFanCast 153

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles, led by Quarterback Nick Foles put on a horrendous display of Offense, and lost, at home, to the Dallas Cowboys 17-3.  The shock of the day (among many) was that Foles performed so poorly overall.  After stellar weeks coming in for the injured Vick, Foles started again against the Cowboys in a battle for first place in the NFC East.  Eagles fans were very hopeful for many reasons, one of which the expectation that Foles would help the Eagles break the home losing streak that goes back to September 2012.

Unfortunately the Eagles Offense played poorly, with Foles executing a professional NFL Offense like he just graduated high school.  He was inaccurate, he was hesitant to throw into coverage, he did not get rid of the ball fast enough, and he had much trouble deciphering the Cowboys’ Defensive attack.  All told, it was one of the worst Eagles games, possibly one of the worst NFL games, we have had the unfortunate luck to see.

On the more positive side, the Eagles Defense played well again, and truly seems to be improving week to week since the Broncos game back in Week 4 of the season.  Unfortunately with no Offense to put points on the board, the Eagles team was left high and dry at Lincoln Financial Field again, with our runners falling down without being touched, and players dropping passes when a pass was actually thrown to them.

All in all, we hope this was a minor stumble on the season for Foles, but we will not get to see how he recovers, as he will sit out with a concussion in the game against the New York Giants this coming Sunday.  Michael Vick will return from his hamstring injury and start the game, hoping to bring a win with him.  We all hope for that.

In Foles We Trust – EaglesFanCast 152

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Sunshine State 31-20.  The Eagles move to 3-3 on the year, and remain tied for the top of the NFC East.  But what was most important in the game is the performance of Quarterback Nick Foles.  With Michael Vick sitting out to rest his hamstring, Foles commanded the Eagles Offense over a tough Bucs D, throwing for three touchdown passes, AND running in another.  Riley Cooper had 120 yards and a TD, DeSean Jackson had 64 yards and two TD’s, Shady McCoy added another 55 yards receiving on two receptions, and another five Eagles caught passes on the day… all adding up to Foles’ 296 passing yards.  Where was the running game?  Healthy, thanks to McCoy’s 116 yards (on 25 rushes) on the ground, with Bryce Brown also carrying five times for 20 yards.  A bunch of stats, but it proves a poing: Foles had confident command of that Offense that day.

As such, we talk about the Foles-Vick situation in Philly.  Which quarterback should lead this team moving forward?  Has Vick really lost the job, and has Foles really won it yet?  Does there need to be a change, or should the Eagles think to the future and develop Foles into the future leader they think he could be?  Right now there is no way to know what coach Chip Kelly is going to do.  It seems that Vick is comfortable sitting until his hamstring is fully healed, and why not?  Foles helped orchestrate a win over the Giants, and commanded a victory over the Bucs.

But this week there is a significant test.  The Dallas Cowboys visit Lincoln Financial Field, a place where the Eagles have not won since September of 2012.  Romo and the Cowboys Offense have put up significant points and yards, and the Eagles Defense is still not stellar by any stretch.  Whichever quarterback gets the call, they will be looking for a division win, and first place alone in the NFC East.  It’s going to be an interesting week.

There is a time for everything, and now is the time to reach out to us…
