Number 5 Retired – EaglesFanCast 149

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles lose their second game of the season, and slip to 1-2, with the unfortunate prospect of going to Denver to face the powerful Broncos this coming weekend.  The Kansas City Chiefs, helmed by new head coach Andy Reid, handed the Eagles yet another home loss.  Now the Eagles have not won a home game in over a year.  Eagles fans, nonetheless, welcomed Andy Reid back with much applause and cheers, properly thanking him for many years of successful Eagles teams and many years of hopeful seasons.

Also receiving a standing ovation and cheers was former quarterback Donovan McNabb, who the Eagles organization retired his number, 5, at a halftime ceremony.  Fan favorite (who also had HIS number 20 retired last year), Brian Dawkins was the emcee… and pretty much received as much in the way of cheering from the fans as did McNabb.  It was a memorable moment, a deserving moment as arguably the best quarterback in franchise history, yet marred by an Eagles team that did everything it could to hand the victory to Reid and the Chiefs.

This week the Eagles head a mile high, and battle a hot Peyton Manning.  Hopefully new head coach Chip Kelly will coach a way to score more or find a way to neutralize Manning.

The New and Old – EaglesFanCast 148

The Philadelphia Eagles log their first loss of the season, at home, falling to the San Diego Chargers 33-30.  The Offense was again exciting, if not somewhat muted, in the game, but our Defense showed what we feared in the preseason.  The secondary was ineffective, it seemed several receivers were open on every play, and there was almost no Eagles blitz to be seen.  But we knew the D was going to struggle.  The first week was an illusion as they took on a hobbled RGIII.  Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had plenty of time to find his targets all day, and there were enough mistakes that allowed them to simply score too many points.  A bright spot is the Defense recovered two more fumbles, and Michael Vick and the rest of the Offense didn’t turn the ball over at all.

Vick had a career day, finding his receivers quickly and effectively, and keeping the Chargers Defense on their heels, allowing the Eagles to move the ball down the field.

Moving into this week, the Kansas City Chiefs come knocking on the door of the Linc, with the big man himself, Andy Reid leading the way.  No coach knows the Eagles better than Reid, but his biggest disadvantage is his replacement, Chip Kelly.  Hopefully Reid will typically out-think himself, and make enough bad play calls and poor clock management to keep his Offense (and our Defense) off the field.  This is a big game despite that, as it would feel much better going into Denver the following week 2-1 instead of 1-2.

At halftime of tomorrow’s game, former quarterback Donovan McNabb will once again walk onto the turf, this time to have his number retired.  Brian Dawkins will emcee the event, and it is sure to be an emotional day for Eagles fans.  McNabb was one of the best players in franchise history, as well as one of the best to helm the Offense.  He was exciting, talented, had the players’ trust, and brought much in the way of confidence and that chance of a victory to every game.  His play, along with other talented players and coaches, brought the Eagles to a Super Bowl for the first time in a long time.  Although the Eagles came up just short, it was a great ride, and one we should never forget.

Express yourself!

Dysfunctional – EaglesFanCast 143

Well the Philadelphia Eagles lose their 43rd straight game, all hell breaks loose, cats and dogs are living together, and it’s complete anarchy.

Perhaps that’s a bit melodramatic, but it sure feels that way, doesn’t it?  The Eagles lose their eighth straight game, another coach (in Jim Washburn) is fired, and it becomes public that he was a bully and disruptive to the team!  What else is going to happen to this Eagles team before the merciful end of the season happens in a few weeks?

In this show, though, we talk about Bryce Brown’s play, both good and bad.  Todd feels that the Eagles also have to clean house of players as well as coaches, letting go of Vick at the end of the season, and trading Shady McCoy and Desean Jackson.  Chuck doesn’t agree with all of that, and feels that good coaches can instill better play from the talent that’s here, including building leaders.  We try to stay positive, and have several laughs, but it’s obvious that Eagles Nation is depressed at this point.  We’ll move forward though… we’re Eagles fans.

Who’s the New Coach? – EaglesFanCast 142

After a few weeks off due to sickness… the flu, not sick of the Eagles… we are back to discuss our favorite, yet hapless, team.

The season is essentially over, there is little doubt left that Andy Reid is coaching his last games as an Eagle, and the fans have given up all hope.  We talk about how this season was the perfect storm against the team; with multiple injuries ruining sections, star players having just horrible years, and poor coaching from the top down.  The Eagles, and owner Jeffrey Lurie, are at a crossroads.  We were asked who would we hire as the new head coach, and we fumble over the answer, as we just get lost in the speculation.

One thing we are very unsure of, with a major change coming, are the Eagles headed into years of mediocre results, or will a new coaching staff be able to ignite the arguably very talented player base into a playoff contender again?  Unfortunately we will have to wait another ten months to find out.  After how this season has transpired, this will be a very long wait… and there are still weeks, and undoubtedly losses, to go in this season.

Have Hope – EaglesFanCast 141

The Philadelphia Eagles fall to the New Orleans Saints at Lincoln Financial Field, on Monday Night Football, and all but cement this season as a total failure.  Eagles fans’ reactions range from anger to apathy, and many wonder if moves by the Eagles’ upper management shouldn’t be made now instead of at the end of the season.  Speculation is everywhere, yet fans we have to endure the pain of not being able to do a thing but sit and watch a sad display week after week.

This week Chuck flies solo in a short show due to scheduling issues, and next week’s show will be put out on Thursday instead of Tuesday.  I talk a bit about the game, how people can help out the victims of Hurricane Sandy, updates to our iPhone / Android app, and the upcoming Dallas Cowboys game.

It’s all good, Eagles fans, we’ll endure this together, debate the reasons we’re suffering, and still have some bit of hope.
