Black Friday – EaglesFanCast 167

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles maintained their first place hold on the NFC East by beating the St. Louis Rams at The Linc 34-28.  The Eagles Offense has been outscored by their opponent’s Offense two weeks straight now, but the Eagles Special Teams and Defense are helping to put points up on the board.  The Eagles Offense has been sputtering, partly because of a depleted O-line, but also because of miscues and costly turnovers.  But as many say, a Win is a Win, and the Eagles have chalked up four of them in the first five games of the season.  This week the Eagles play host to the Division rivals New York Giants, a team that has been surging lately, and seems to have found their way in this season.  The game is on Sunday evening, and the world will be watching.  Will the struggling Birds show up again this week, or will the team show that it is learning from the many mistakes, and put together an attack against the Giants on both sides of the ball?  Either way, there will be an amped-up fanbase in attendance, who are already buzzing for this game.  It’s a great and exciting time to be an Eagles fan.  Granted our hearts may not always agree, but this is what it is all about.  We bleed green, and expect nothing short of all out heart from our players and coaches.

This week’s game is why we tune in, why we buy the tickets, why we arrive seven hours early to tailgate.  It’s about the love of a team, and the hard work that represents what the city of Philadelphia was built on.

E-A-G-L-E-S…… EAGLES!!

Birds – EaglesFanCast 166

EaglesFanCast PodcastWe are back after a long and unwanted hiatus.  We do want to thank all of you for the messages during our absence, but technically and personally all is well and we are moving forward with the show.

The Philadelphia Eagles are now 3 wins and 1 loss on the season, and that loss against the San Francisco 49ers really shook Eagles fans up.  Despite the team putting up 21 points, none of those points came from our explosive Offense, which fizzled this week.  Quarterback Nick Foles had an off game, throwing two interceptions and missing several receivers.  Our very depleted Offensive Line did not protect Foles, nor were able to open the gates for Shady McCoy or Darren Sproles.  There were dropped passes and two fumbles lost to tie up a poor outing on the day.  Overall they only gained 213 yards of total Offense, of which only 22 yards rushing.  Painful.  One of the few standouts was from Jeremy Maclin, who continues to shine week after week.  The Eagles Defense did well, including a pick-six by Malcolm Jenkins in the second quarter.

Without a doubt, the standout group in the game was the Special Teams unit.  Early in the first quarter the Eagles blocked a 49er punt, which was run back for a touchdown putting the Birds on the scoreboard first in the game.  Then in the second quarter, a 49er punt to Darren Sproles amounted to an 82 yard return for a touchdown.  At that point it put the Eagles on top 21-10, with the promise the Eagles Offense would add much to that total the rest of the game.  That did not happen, and the Offense needs to figure out what went wrong, and how to fix it.  Lane Johnson returning to the lineup will be one of those fixes.

This week the Eagles are hosting the St. Louis Rams who are 1-2 on the season.  There will be a very loud crowd there to greet them at The Linc!

DeSean Is Gone – EaglesFanCast 165

EaglesFanCast PodcastThings are never boring when you are an Eagles fan.  We have experienced that for years.  This offseason has been the same thing.  Not only do the Eagles take an active approach in free agency, but then rumors start running that the Eagles are shopping around their best wide receiver, DeSean Jackson.  After much speculation from the media, fan discussions, and heated debates, it all seemed to quiet down with Jackson himself indicating he would be back with the Eagles this season.  Less than a week later, the Eagles release their Pro Bowl receiver.  It sparks a fury of national coverage, and divides the Eagles fan base over what management has done.  Just five days later, DeSean Jackson signs a contract with the Division rival Washington Redskins, assuring the Eagles face Jackson twice a year for the next few years.

So a lot has happened in a very short amount of time. To work some of it out, Jimmy Kempski of Philly.com joins us on this episode to break down some of the timeline, opinions, and effects of losing the now-controversial receiver.

Free Agency 2014 – EaglesFanCast 164

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe 2014 NFL season came to a close, the Super Bowl was played, and the players from all teams cleaned out their locker rooms, some for the last time with their team, some for the last time as a player in the league.  The work then began for the coaches, management, owners, agents, and many others.  Free agency was just around the corner, and the teams do what they can to strengthen their team where they can, or when they lose players.  The Eagles were very active in the first few days of free agency this year, picking up players and even a trade for another running back that took many by surprise.

But did the Eagles really improve drastically, or was it an incremental improvement?  What were the missed opportunities so far, and now how much does the team need to rely on the Draft to finish the job?  Tonight we sat down with our longtime friend, Jason Brewer, the founder of Bleeding Green Nation, and talk about all of these areas.  We also have the pleasure of trashing the rest of the NFC East in mocking some (ok, most) of their decisions.

A Successful Season – EaglesFanCast 163

EaglesFanCast PodcastThe Philadelphia Eagles 2013-2014 season comes to a close as the Birds lose to the Saints in a the final seconds of a heartbreaker.  Philadelphia was treated to a home playoff game after the Eagles finish the season with 10 wins and 6 losses and take the NFC East Division.  The team played well above our season’s expectations, and although they struggled at the beginning of the season, we saw a completely different team than how they started, with a new quarterback in Nick Foles, Lesean McCoy taking the NFL Rushing title as well as breaking the Eagles franchise regular season rushing record.  Desean Jackson also racked up over 1300 yards receiving, our tight ends exceeded expectations, and our Defense played much, much better than any of us anticipated.  And oh yeah, we have a couple of new coaches as well… anyone still have doubts?

To say this was a successful season would be an understatement.  Yes, some can argue that losing in the first round of the playoffs was a missed opportunity.  This Eagles team, though, established itself as a new team with a new approach, new strategies, new player attitude, and a drive to win when it seemed that was all lost just a year ago.

This was a fun season, an exciting season.  It was heartbreaking to see it end, but we cannot wait for next season.  It’s been a few years since we felt like this, and this feels good.  Just one more for the road, E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
