As much as I agree with Eric's comment about name on the front vs. name on the back I cannot look past his transgressions.

Signing Mike Vick/Ron Mexico sheds such a negative light on the team, it saddens me. Whatever happened to character first? Ok maybe it was time to loosen those reigns but wow. To go from the gold standard to the gutter...Look out for that first step, it a doozie!

As far as I am concerned he does deserve a second chance, just not here, not on my team.

Until he is gone I will consider myself an Eagles fan in exile.

Well, I have had a few days to digest this ginormous story. I have heard the massive amounts of feedback (both favorable and quite unfavorable) and I have formed my opinion, based largely on the following:

* It is the Eagles stated mission to put the best possible product on the field in an attempt to win a championship (hopefully multiple ones, but I digress).

* When pledging allegiance to a pro sports team, one is rooting for the name on the FRONT of the jersey, not the back.

With those two thoughts, I am on board with the signing. However, let me be clear. What he did was reprehensible. Awful. I am a dog-lover and always have been. I have a chocolate lab and although he is the dumbest dog alive, I would not want ANYONE to harm him and I would reply in kind if one did. I will not be buying a Mick Vick #7 jersey, poster, or dog collar. But, he committed a crime, was caught, sentenced, and served his time handed to him by a jury of his peers. I believe it is time to move on, and think about DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin split out wide, B-West in the backfield, and Mike Vick somewhere on the field. Peeps, that is A LOT of speed for a defense to try and contain.

I'm still in an incredible amount of disbelief since all this has taken place. When I first heard the news, I seriously froze and didn't know what to say. Watching all the different networks talk about this made HALF of my stomach turn. Obviously, like everyone else, I had no idea and no concern that my team would even be interested..but also I felt as though, maybe, it made a bit of hidden since. I'm not the type of guy to hate people for what they've done in the past, and I wanted to see him return. Heck some people in this league have done worse things. I just didn't forsee him being an eagle. However, putting aside his past, I firmly believe that, WHEN REINSTATED, he can help the offense by forcing defenses to account for his presence. With all that said, the guy won't be ready to help the team any other way this year, and he still hasn't proved he has the same ability he used to. That's why I'm very very back-and-forth on my opinion about this.

My opinion keeps changing, but the one constant remains- he's not that good of a QB to bring this kind of attention and vibe to the team. I heard someone say that they brought him on so they basically own the rights to him in a trade next year. Any thoughts on that?

I'm so conflicted about this. Yes, I think people in life should get 2nd chances and can change. Yes, I wanted some other team to pick up Vick. I feel totally hypocritical. How to figure this one out?
A) This is good for Donovan. He gets to be a mentor to the one he wants. He didn't have any say in signing Kolb and that was a huge distraction
B) In the short term, what's good for Donovan is good for the Eagles :-)
C) Longer term, how will we feel if Donovan hands over the keys to Vick in 2 years? Will Vick really be our guy?

Drama drama drama!

It's not clear cut. Bad behavior. Salvation and second chances. And win v losing. Tough stuff.

Good, bad or ugly on the deal.

I can speak from a similar deal that happened in Australian Football this year. Ben Cousins from the West Coast Eagles won a Brownlow (similar to a mvp award), was involved in drug takings and eventually sacked from his club and out of the game for one year. The team I supported Richmond eventually picked him in the draft as no one wanted him. What eventually happened was huge amount of publicity (good and bad)on the individual and the club, it eventually sold heaps of season tickets. He has now became a success story with his leadership off and on the field for the team.

On Vick, i suppose everybody should be given a second chance, I applaud the Eagles for pushing the boundaries on their decision. Basically he wont be playing each week and probably will not be an option until next year anyway. How many athletics comeback to their best after 2 years out of their game?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

AussieMike
ps how many shootouts will we be involved in this year ?
